FORWARD...my trusted steed...vorwaertz aufwaertz....

I have two more weeks at the Last Resort, then Buck Brannaman will have the arena for his foundation workshop and I will be heading out to the mountains again to give him the stamina and courage of a mountain horse. There is a beautiful jumping arena outside and I have started to work on obstacles and little jumps...Ever wondered why nobody has shown a mustang in coach driving yet....hmmm....?
My training is exclusive english, there will be no sliding stops and no roll backs, but instead I will come to a sensible halt and do a turn on the haunches. We will have walk trot and canter with emphasis on rhythm and round smooth and with a simple leadchange comlete both sides of the required maneuvers. I also have no tricks in store, even though Trisha thinks that he would be great at blowing a kiss and saying his name....also following around and other sweetness..Basically the horse will be trained for basic dressage.

Coppersmith#900 comparison and Mustang Conformation...

This is how it started 45 some days ago...the horse looked real juvenile and small with beautiful eyes and a good curiosity, but aloof and content with himself....
BLM PICKUP DAY MARCH 10th

Out of this world...a deeep felt laugh is like medicine...Pat Burge and Moon and 900 and I
This was yesterday with Pat at the arena and we were having a mighty good time visiting with Melody and Jessica, who came by to see our progress...I am schlepping all kinds of paraphenalia around from spray-bottles to balls to flopping jackets and drag poles and barrels across the pretty arena floor...then the wind does it's part....
This is when I noticed that his body was changing and he was starting to grow into his new life...
Looks at these mustang feet and the natural cavity and curvature of his foot. I will trim him myself before the competition but at this point he is taking care of everything including his strong ironlike rim himself...

Supple and harmonious with the way of a smooth operator...a good citizen ....coppersmith
Hindend different from my spanish mustangs, higher set tail, different hip and croup very pronounced hindleg...

Trisha Swift starting to melt...

Wonderful for me to see him work and improve day to day and his body and mind blooming (Trisha Swift)

Like I said, it takes a village...some weeks ago now our first trail ride

The Queens of Crepe - every barrel has a cookie...

The funny thing about this indoor is that there is rabbits and a load of birds in there, that are desperately trying to keep building their nests from stuff picked up on the ground. The maintenance must be overload, with the wind, the roof is hollering and little pieces of hay and alfalfa sail through the lightshafts down to the working horses...then the birds dive to catch them before they hit the ground...We have music, cow-simulators -sliding doors and suspect noises outside...barrels and logs and windows and mirrors...and every so often new faces show up...today Pat and I worked and then Melody and Jessica came and visited for a while...

English training, conditioning and toning...

My english trainer Trisha Swift came out today and we scheduled lessons for the next 3 weeks, during which we will try to create a foundation that will allow him to go on in disciplines of hunter jumper, dressage, eventing, english pleasure and if someone wants to turn him into a western pleasure horse that will work also...He has a great stride, big overstep, a smooth transition to trot and a soft mouth, he has a round carriage and is unusually straight for a youngster. He likes ground poles and I have lunged him over several obstacles, which he generally enjoys and he has started to put voice command and leg, rein and seat-aids together to help him back up, come to a smooth stop and also turn nicely.

SHED THE ABETTE AND PULL OUT THE NIEDERSUESS...

We had a mustang advocate meeting today and talked about the upcoming Wyoming Roundup July 11(?) White Mountain. It is foaling season and Sun J will run heavily pregnant mares and newborns for miles to the trapsite. That is our Tjianaman Square....peaceful demonstration to protest the antiquated and aggressive   roundup methods that injure and kill our horses...UN-NECESSARY...Then I found a copper-haired girl and took her to my copper-haired horse and hoped they would fall in love ....Coppersmith has met a lot of wonderful people on his path so far, who do YOU think should vie for him....Look back in the blog and give me your choice??? Most everybody is enticed by him and it sure would be wonderful for me to have him continue his wonderful successful life with a worthy individual...I also traded the old Abetta saddle for the old but bold Niedersuess from Austria, the bridle is a bit more refined and I will follow suit and straighten up some more before too long also.

Crash vest - will need a new home - before too long...

Here is a picture of the crash vest I borrowed from my friend Patricia for the initial rides on Coppersmith. It is a size small, but did fit me well, otherwise the bottom part hits the back of your saddle. Pat has asked me to see whether I can find a new home for the vest, when I am done with it. IT HAS BEEN WORN BUT NOT USED YET....The white spots is the SNOW that is falling again here in Redfeather.

Coppersmith#900 and Doc Holliday

Lourie Zipf and Justin Ripley came out today...Justin's mustang Doc (who is from Sandwash Basin 7 years old) has never been in an inside arena, and Justin was interested in some of the formation drill work considering to join our mustang rider group...Due to the incredible wind in the last couple of days, only people with inside arenas get to ride, that is if they get their horse saddled and in there.

Justin and I worked some on the parallel riding and then got Coppersmith to meet Doc...We both rode him and exchanged ideas and progress remarks...Lourie took some beautiful pictures...thank you...

Point of equal distance, midpoint - point of no return....

My main objective from now on will be to balance the introduction of new things and challenges with the opportunity for the mind of the horse to settle, the body to gain weight and get stronger and the heart to open and stay so...

This is DOC HOLLIDAY - Justin Ripley (Mustangs I have known)

Justin Ripley, who manages equine affairs at the Sundance Resort in Redfeather Lakes, travelled through Arizona and found this Jicarilla Mustang. He loved his appearance and demeanor and was taken by his presence....so far, to make an offer assuming that he had been ridden. Then a bit later he groomed him and picked up his mane on the left just to find the FREEZEBRAND .... he gasped...Now I hope we will have a good ride in the Soapstone or Red Mountain in the next couple of weeks...

Carnivores and Herbivores...

Robyn Hall, whose father is a Wildlife-Biologist brought up a question after lunch. We had worked with the horses in the morning and were now letting them stand in the arena some 30 feet from the kitchen, where we were unpacking our "steaks and cheese-fajitas.." Melody had brought fresh apple pie and I was chomping on carrots...
So the question: "Do you think the horse is afraid when it smells the meat on your breath after lunch...?"
Hmmm, I think it would be naive to assume they don't put two and two together and figure I am a carnivore ... even if I eat carrots to my steak...
She said, her dad was thinking about a study on bears invading households of meat-eaters vs. vegetarians...
I like this whole thing the way it whirls around in my brain...
Anyway I did not have steak, and when we returned to work with Aragon and Coppersmith they did not have any worry in the world...I have also noticed I get more of a reaction out of him when I "threaten" his underside and feet, rather than his withers...for all it's worth I think their life has taught them that injury and death for most of todays mustangs comes from the ground: snakes, holes, wire, dogs, mud, coyote and other groundbounds...
That is until the helicopter shows up on their event horizon, then none of their knowledge can help them...Legs or belly or withers or other....

Take a moment for Escalante...Grey Eagle would be proud of him....

It is really important to get involved beyond the MakeOver to make a difference for the special plight of the WILD HORSES OF AMERICA...discussion forums and educating efforts cannot be emphasized enough to give a voice to the conflicts surrounding these animals in todays competitive aspects of nature, development public and special interests.

There was some rain today and I spent some time with my mustangs...

This is what awaits me after my daily work with Coppersmith and these are my horses (Two of them grulla and grey/roan and 3 black) and friends ranging from 25 years old to 3 years young....All except this little precious one are under saddle and enjoying both work and small freedoms around the Redfeather Mountains....Robyn Hall, here with Galitzier is getting herself prepared to becoming both a veterinarian and a horse lover with special feelings for mustangs (Beside her own horses Tyler and Shady). She also has become a wonderful friend and supporter of mine in the effort to show off our beautiful and talented mustangs...

A little potpouree of things...Last resort and my galitzier and Escalante with Robyn...

Lourie Zipf weathered the elements today and came to take these photographs and spend some time with me. Besides being a talented photographer, she also owns two horses and is always eager to see what individual bag of tricks are around...There was also a young woman from Utah, who remembers her father going out onto the LITTLE BOOKCLIFFS and roping mustangs for their training and selling stock...She became very fond of them and even though I don't know when this happened and what the conditions were (for the horses and legally) I hope to see some of her photographs and hear more stories...I also encouraged her to consider a participation in the MakeOver and again I am hoping to create some interest in Coppersmith so that his prospective new owner would be able to start relating even before the competition....

what a difference a day makes...

Last night the cows arrived and were put next to the mustangs and today the roping started...we were watching...not like...
Melody had paintings out and we had OUR poster, some articles about mustangs and then we mixed with the ranch crowd...Megan came with Nevada and Robyn had her first jumping lesson on Aragon, the wind came up. Coppersmith got lunged  -  made quite the impression over jumps - and then I rode for 10 minutes...

HE IS BEAUTIFUL AND GENEROUS AND His FAR-away EYES MOVE me...

I don't like the look of the open mouth,  we were prep to back...

THE LAST RESORT - LuAnn Goodyear's equestrian center....

Coppersmith#900 and Aragon moved 3 days ago, one month into the training. We are at a fine facility with large indoor arena, "REAL BIG" horses and washracks, blankets, stalls with sliding doors, cross-ties,  radio, mirror and "Tattersaal"( that is historic and german for sort of a spectator viewing area adjoining the arena)... The wind and snow have not let up and even though we are posh in the inside, we live outside and the weather gets to us...There is a very beautiful burro out there and I think the two are talking shop... Coppersmith#900 is pacing himself through all these events and I hope to generate some interest in him for a possible future adopter. It would be optimal for someone to get involved into his training and work at this time and then slowly transition to a new ownership during the MakeOver...

Melody Perez and Robyn came out today and we played and worked for hours in the arena, oblivious to the world outside. Then we put them away, took a lunch break and did a small session in the afternoon...

PICTURES FROM AN EXHIBITION AT THE REDFEATHER LAKES LIBRARY

For all of us who realize that if the youth does not pick up the plight of the wild horses, they will not have a chance....here is a little bit of my work in the northern Rockies. Since years I have not only ridden and trained mustangs and made them a symbol on the hill when my neighbors return from church shopping or work, but I also have written and spoken about these horses. A one hour video about a very special place of mustangs was shown in the library and then discussed, and my friends Guenter and Sonja, who are riding on Mustangs on the Continental Divide did their presentation of exhilerating pictures and adventure stories. (www.abenteuerreiter.de) We had a photo exhibit and soon a painting exhibit by Melody Perez and I have done drawing workshops with schoolkids, always taking advantage of the opportunity to tell them the story and hear what they have to say.
We have told of our witnessing of a roundup and now we gather again to put together a video of the Mustang Make Over.
Please become an advocate and educator in your community and take a stand. Once we learn more and understand the predicament and the circumstances involved we will be able to become part of the solution and make the plight of the WILD HORSES heard and understood.
There are beautiful pieces of writing about compassion by authors like Mark Bekoff of the University of Colorado and also valuable writing by Temple Grandin. Here is a snip of one of my favorite pieces:
"In the saddle with Freud"....the horse, a running animal, illogical and irrational, represents in the collective fantasy the image itself of vital energy and instinctive logic in its most genuine totality. Deprived of the ability to be predator the horse reveals in a most visible way the saving power, and at the same time the destructive power of PURE INSTINCT....our relationship to the horse is characterized by the construction of two things,  which simultaneously tie us to the same destiny. TO RIDE is an act of fusion, an attempt to integrate instinct with reason.....
In these times of ecological awareness, it seems, that at least as for as the mental life of man is concerned and the dualistic concept of mind/body we are less and less fully operative. The quest for the horse is a sign of our need to contact our ANIMAL LIKE NESS.... and so on...text by Marcia Galli

MELODY IS GIVING IT A WHIRL>>>>

I encourage to draw...

Since the beginning of the month I have a little mustang exhibit at the Redfeather Lakes Library... Today I went to add some items and school-kids were sitting on the floor looking and reading and listening. It was the kind of atmosphere, where learning and understanding can occur... MY work will be there until the end of the month, so if your weekend travels include Redfeather Lakes stop by and give it a whorl or a whilr it a whirl. The mustangs tell the story.

Time to take them out under saddle into the woods and ditches...

Today I brought Aragon back and Coppersmith was pleased to see his friend and mentor. I worked both of them in the roundpen with saddle on and also let them travel through the pasture and the trees on their own all tacked up. There was a little trot and canter and it was all within reason...Then Justin came and even though we had decided to start out ponying we actually never attached the leadline. We have identified several issues that I will be working on in the next couple of weeks. Some of them on the ground some of them under saddle. The weather was questionable (Maybe rain or snow) but Coppersmith tucked right in behind Aragon and we rode for approx 1 1/2 . Very similar terrain to what I have been walking him on his own.
