Whereafter we were picked up by a small single engine Cessna to fly over the 800some mustangs of the Sand Wash Basin only to return back to the Strawbale House to dive into the advantages of Sustainable Living.

And why did this not happen?

Like with so many other things, one does not really know. It was an intent, a vision, a dream and it is clearly a beautiful idea to be pursued now by someone else.

What has continued though is the love for the AMERICAN MUSTANG and the engagement to secure a spot for the wild horse on Public Lands and/or whatever the next development of a PRECIOUS GIFT to the People of this land. is

What also continued is the life of my horses here at the strawbale house. The 7 mustangs, Aragon, Silhouette, Escalante, Galicio, Veedawoo, Ruigoord, and Coppersmith.

Aragon is now 26 years old and I hope to ride him through the coming spring and summer. Silhouette is 17 and lives with a neighbor who has a mustang mare, that wanted a sistermare. I will ride her also this year. Galicio is now 13 and as my only here-born mustang is my special child with detail to be revealed later. Escalante is still the non riding companion horse to Chief, who is blind.

Veedawoo died 4 years ago (at age 12) after a rather simple dental procedure, I think he had a severe reaction to medication. Coppersmith who had been close to a lightning strike at one point (no injury though), overreacted in another storm and broke his coffin bone (and even after successul surgery did not heal and was euthanized) he was 9 years old (born 2008-2017)

Since 2010 and the tragic Calico Roundup a number of things have changed for the AMERICAN MUSTANG. I also always believe that "EVERY EFFORT" counts. Individual, groups, campaigns. At the same time it is very important to realize that the ADVOCACY cannot FLOAT each enterprize. All engagement should assume voluntering and self finance, unless you produce a product that is in demand. That could be Art (photography, movies, writing) training, performing, Tours onto HMAs or a sanctuary open to the public.
I have been a bit involved with all of those aspects: I have ridden and toured on the range (on Mustangs), particpated in the friends of the mustangs, and with that witnessed a roundup. I have trained a mustang in 90 days for the 2011 Mustang Make Over, I have worked in 2 Sanctuaries and are familiar with at least 3 others. I have been to long and short term holding, I have been to a BLM sanctioned ECO-Sanctuary and I have demonstrated on the streets for legislation to change. I have made presentations on the searing questions of the issue and I am not afraid of conflict and conflict resolution:
Since the resources of advocates are limited it is important to be able to distinguish:
SOMETIMES WE FOCUS OUR EFFORTS ON WHAT WE CAN DO
and sometimes
ON WHAT WE CAN STOP.

THE FIRST PRIORITY IS TO STOP THE ROUNDUPS
TO PRESERVE THE MUSTANG ON THE RANGE (genetic viable numbers)
TO DO EVERYTHING TO SPREAD AWARENESS AND ESTABLISH STANDING on the range.(Active citizen engagement with clean up and possible fertility control, census etc)

Then the camp usually splits:
Some only train and ride and are not involved in the fact finding mission.
Some concentrate on the "AFTER LIFE", the rescue, the sanctuary the Holding facilty.
Some concentrate on the art of the mustang, spending valuable time on the range with the animals.
Others again are deep into the facts and discussion with focus on litigation and problem solving.

But for most of us it is some sort of a mix, or an alternating circuit, which gets us involved here and there.

Here is my bit for today:

There are approximately 20 WILD HORSE (MUSTANG) SANCTUARIES in the country; (Some overlap with domestic horses, most are a mix of rescue and sanctuary and domestics and mustangs)

ONLY 4 of those SANCTUARIES have shown longevity and prevalence:

RETURN TO FREEDOM (CA) - NEDA DE MAYO -
BLACK HILLS WILD HORSE SANCTUARY(SD) - Susan Watt, Dayton o'Hyde
INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE PRESERVATION OF MUSTANG and BURRO(ISPMB)(SD) Karen Sussman
MUSTANG SANCTUARY SHINGLETOWN (CA) Dianne Nelson

Most if not all of the Sanctuaries are 501C3 - non profits - depending on public support for their operating expenses. Some of them are as small as "5 horses on 300 acres" (no public access or org. association) Some are obscure and defunct, but still carry a non-profit status and ask for donations.

I would prefer that those who are in the beginnings or looking for self-definition and access stay private and develop their character before addressing the PUBLIC FORUM with pledges and mission statements.

In the example of the BLACK HILLS WILD HORSE SANCTUARY we have annual operating costs in the Millions, approx.500 horses on approx 13 000 acres and a large annual tourism traffic on the byway of the Custer National Park etc.
HOT DRY with all physical hard work. Not the stuff that tourism is made of. And not for the faint of heart. Our days begin around 6:30 (that is my day, I am the morning shift) and I feed Pasque Flower and Dulcena, Regal G, Hudson, Spirit, Shania, Ayashe, Dexie and some of mine (who are not on the range - Silhouette, Escalante and Rui). The hay is in big square bales, and is distributed by wheel barrow to individual feeders, which have been topic of many discussions in regard to convenience, functionality and friendliness. Discussions develop around each activity, whether it has to do with machinery or with animals. After breakfast riding and training. 4 saddle horses (some overweight, some barn sour, some a little lazy, some aloof and most yearning for attention and relating...are kept conditioned and advancing depending on their age and stage of training. 2 youngsters are being trained in hand. The obligatory and healing ride on the range is to check and fill the water tanks, visit and observe the herd and herd dynamics and possibly try to envision a chance to bring a horse in or release a horse out. RIDING IS BREATHING AND LIFE....we take our time, even if it is 100 degrees...
Worth Mustang Makeover but circumstances cancelled the project. Then in June came the HIGH PARK FIRE and I was glad not having a young mustang to take care of that was geared to compete in autumn. Nonetheless the fire had its effects on my home and neighborhood and led me to consider and contemplate my future in the Strawbale House, In Red Feather Lakes, with MUSTANG ECO TOURS and with the mustang issue at large.

With shortage of hay and a burned landscape the thought of mobility and flexibility gained momentum and I decided to rent the strawbale house and take the MUSTANG ECO TOUR on the road yet again. This time not to the BLACK HILLS WILD HORSE SANCTUARY but to a small 1000 acre upstart sanctuary in DEER TRAIL, south of Denver.

What attracted me was the OBJECTIVE of this particular PROJECT:
Similar to the Black Hills the sanctuary was to provide for horses that had been through a roundup.
Similar they were to be guaranteed a life of peace and space. And there was the goal of training and adoption. Similar also was the scenario of a man's wild horse dream now realized and continued and carried by a woman, that loved that man for his dream.

The particularity of this sanctuary: IT WAS A LOCAL COLORADO SANCTUARY FOR A LOCAL COLORADO HERD with LOCAL COLORADOANS engaging and caring. I could not think of anything that would make more sense, acknowledging that I CONSIDER THE MUSTANG NATURE'S RENEWABLE RESOURCE HORSE (provided, raised, educated and delivered at no charge) (we all know where the charges are - and that they are NOT with the horses on the range)

THIS IS THE SAND WASH BASIN HERD - and over 12 Sand Wash Basin horses call it home. There are currently over 410 mustangs on the 160 000 acres of HMA west of Maybell Colorado and over 60 foals were born in 2013. The death rate averages 7% and in cooperation with the HSUS and other volunteer organizations in the area the attempt is made to manage the herd with fertility control rather than roundups.

Whether or not we seek dialogue with the BLM or are pro PZP native, the care of the horses in the local arena (even though this is a federal institution) is close to my heart.

It is now over 3 months ago that I came to this facility owned and founded by Michelle Sander, who has dedicated the ranch to her late father, whose dream it was to have a sanctuary for wild horses. It is a beautiful near 1000 acre facility at the very northeast corner of the Black Forest in Eastern Colorado. Currently 27 horses call it their home. A set-back is the rather remote location of the Ranch and the fact that it is not home to the owner/operator. Since 3 months I have fed and cared for the horses in the corrals and also watched over those on the range. Together with 2 young Californians (Giulia and Nicholas) and several highly appreciated visitor volunteers, we have ridden and trained, cared for and treated, cleaned the range and removed 1000s of feet of barbed wire, and consecutive t-posts from Cross fences, experimented with feeding and rotation and dealt with weather, wildlife and not so wild life.
Arriving at Beaver Meadows on Thursday Sept. 20th, we were the only campers and the pair of Moose cow and bull were quite the surprise for Aragon and I. Their slow motion movements have affixiating qualities...I was wondering whether I would be well served to put a bell on the horse at night. But I did choose not to expose him to that.

The next day things looked just as sunny and glorious. The little creek running by the campsite and temps dropping below freezing made for a serene night experience. Then the cappucino with the rising sun was marvellous.

For over 10 years I have been a member of the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers, an associate volunteer organization for the Forest Service. My patrols extend through most of the Roosevelt National Forest here in Northern Colorado. The mounted patrol contentrates on highly traveled and used trails and we maintain communication between the Forest Service and the participating public. The work in the following years will shift to focus on burn and beetle kill. The land has suffered and a renewal has begun. Here are some images of our last 4 day camping trip and some of the grandiose fall riding.
And then at one point it is TIME TO LEAVE. And the 7 mustangs and I (plus the little cat) moved to the 70 acre pasture by the sheepbarn. (owned by a very generous and beautiful person) and then there was room to MOURN with VIGOR: for the little beloved dog, for the fire goods and for the ones who were less fortunate.

I built a house of straw on a foundation of sand (the biblical no-no)...and three little pigs...Not even a kiss of the fire - not even the odor of ash...just black charr around as far as the eye can see. Phoenix out of the ashes during the year of the dragon...The trees have burned the animals have suffered tremendous loss, they say next year will be an explosion of wildflowers....the Strawbale House, "Don't your horses eat it?" the one that no one wanted to insure, stands solemn in a black and white and wilted neighborhood.. Did I mention that the STRAW-berries also survived and the Bed-STRAW...I am reverend...This was the THIRD fire in golden June of 2012...Hewlett Gulch started late May, then the Stuart Hole fire in Cherokee Park, the back to the POUDRE an the High Park Fire got the fuel and zunder it needed to burn 89 000 acres....June 9th to the end...my story is only a small and relatively harmless account. What I remember most is the constant hauling of horses, from here to Bonner Peak to evacuate there down to Wellington back to here and then around again.

I also remember the strange evening walks with neighbors and friends, and the strange migration of deer and insects...the smell - the life on hold...the thoughts of essential packing.
I will never forget INCIWEB.ORG and the intense search for indicators that the wind, the weather, the watergods would turn the course of events.

This was just the beginning, then the Pre-Evacs started followed by the EVACS, the reverse 911, the collecting of personal belongings..And then on the 23rd, after several SPOT fires and successful jumps across the POUDRE with extreme heat and wind combined Stephens Gulch and Sheep Mountain gave out, the slash pile was lined up and the containment lines, dozer paths and contingency lines accelerated the flames into the 12th filing with heat and speed exceeding the capacity of any fire fighting technology (?) and burned so hot that 20 minutes consumed over 60 houses and charred the landscape with holes burning out roots several feet deep.
There was a life-stream helicopter which allowed us to view and take Screenshots as the fire burned...

Note the only green circle left center is where my mustangs grazed a pasture. The fire did not want to cross the fence into the grazed area. This house was saved.

Note again the triangualar shaped green spot top center of pic is my pasture and house, grass not burned and house safed. Most other building sites visible here were destroyed. On the lower left the dozer line and the contingency lines held the fire away from the other filings.
THE STRAWBALE HOUSE on June 23rd 5pm. As seen on the denverchannel from the helicopter livestream of the fire as it swept through the 12th filing in 20 minutes. Smoke still rising from the house or the tree. At that point I did not know whether this was still burning or not.
House, garage and rock garden... Just a day before my "Equine Mower Ruigoord, the Icelandic" had done his best for fire mitigation eating his little heart out on the high grasses of her leachfield...This burned so hot and fast that more than a week later when we were allowed escorted to inspect our rubble every little item was still burning hot to the touch.
The Final Countdown. You can see that the black line kept its promise to some extent. The fire consumed the 12th filing with little distraction.
This is my beautiful neighborhood with 74E (Redfeather Lakes Rd in the foreground). You can see the charred hills and then the dozer line on the left middle. The 12th filing is but gone, good to remember though, that the fireseason has just started and what is burned will not easily burn again.
There is no room for UTOPIA, only realistic and practical logistics can be incorporated into a broken and ailing system. Our input, whether it feels like compromise or exploitation is what will eventually improve the conditions of the range and with that the horses that we so care for.gabrielehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04782903768894349273noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9104159892896080193.post-80490833639117654852012-05-17T19:59:00.006-07:002012-05-17T20:01:43.605-07:00HEWLETT GULCH - FIRE - May 14,15,16, 17

In our case it meant the first big spring fire. On Monday at 1pm I was hiking with my friends Frank Auer and Jacques Rieux in the Bonner Peak area close to Seaman Reservoir to look at some land that was for sale with great horse property and conditions, except that it had burned badly 7 years ago...when we drove out we noticed a plume of smoke. That it was: a fire 100 acres. Today another story. 7800 acres and 5% contained (one does not know what that means) The fire has flip-flopped directions several times burning first east, then north, then west and then north and east again with evac notices following... With my horses in 4 different locations and pastures I opted to start bringing them down to the flatlands yesterday the day before yesterday, including my 4 year old Colt Galicio, who had cut himself quite serious on the inside of the right hock (with great concern it might have exposed the joint)
He spent the night at the hospital while I was agonizing about the general fate of my horses and the future of MUSTANG ECO TOURS, if these conditions would continue...Late in the night the surgeon called and said that we had had luck and the joint was not compromised, even though the canonbone was exposed...we made a plan and today my guardian angel Kelsey Anne and I picked him up and brought him to a safe place far away from the fire to my trusted veterinarian Deb.
On May 4th I hauled Aragon to the Sand Wash Basin to combine a ride on the WIILD HORSE RANGE with the event of the Sombrero Roundup and a dream, that Nancy Roberts and I had formulated some time ago. She wanted to take her now 4 year old Sand Wash Mustang Odakota back to HIS range and hoped for Aragon and me to accompany her. So it goes, we met at the Maybell Fairgrounds to set up and familiarize the horses with each other. We were joined by Craig Downer and Karen McLain.

We went for a ride that evening overlooking the Yampa valley in wonderful sunshine. In the night Odakota remembered his wild beings and hollered all along to see whether he could raise them in the West. The next morning a bit croggy, we saddled up and got to the range to ride 7 mile ridge, whinning and looking at mustangs in the basin greeting the crisp morning.
The Public during this event was both local and tourists, since the Sombrero roundup was occuring in Maybell. Still we took advantage of receiving and gaining more public exposure for the WILD HORSE Range.

Day 4 was get up at 5:30. Several other advocates camped on the range and we met and took one vehicle to search out the individual bands and locations. The weather was wonderful and as our eyes searched the horizons cameras clicked and binoculars identified Picasso and his newborn foal "Schatzi". There is always a good amount of walking and hiking involved which makes for so much fresh air and good lungs. And the melancholia gets her chance too.

We walked in silence hoping that the roundup of the Sand Wash Basin Wild Horses will be cancelled. Bait trapping is considered and fertility studies are in the works. We plan on work days in August for clean up and hope for some funds from the BLM Director's challenge to afford advocates to come out and help. For now it felt like the range was alive and even though the sheep had completely depleted the forage the horses looked healthy and safe.

Craig Downer presented his book "THE WILD HORSE CONSPIRACY" and explained his concept of "RESERVE DESIGN" in self stabilizing WILD horse herds. He also put to an end the ever so tiresome dispute about the "Nativity" of the WILD HORSE in the North American Continent. Having ORIGINATED here thousands of years ago, there is not another place in the world, that can claim the origin of the horse other than NORTH AMERICA. He spoke about the importance of the post gastric digestive system of the horse and its other related species in regard to reseeding and revitalizing the lands (as opposed to the ruminant digestive system that acts as mere fertilizer) and also commented on the jaw and tooth structure of the horse having incisors and therefore being more selective in its grazing....plausible examples to make us more familiar and comfortable with the constant battle of the arguments.
Craig Downer is traveling the Rocky Mountain States to promote his book: THE WILD HORSE CONSPIRACY. He has stopped by the USGS FORT, the FOREST SERVICE, CSU Equine Behavioral Sciences and CU library to promote his model template of compassionate and self sustaining wild horse design which he calls RESERVE DESIGN. It focuses on establishing large (million acres) multi-geographical reserves with geographical barriers for mustangs with strong buffer zones that will allow the waking and waning of auto regulating and self stabilizing herd structures within designated WILD HORSE manangement areas. It will encourage the horses to stay within their safe areas by utilizing adverse conditioning. - He has stopped by the Strawbale house in Red Feather Lakes and Mustang Eco Tours for a couple of days (events at the Medicine Horse Mustang Awareness Day in Boulder, and several library presentations, incl. a meeting with the Colorado Wild Horse and Burro Partners. On May 4th he will continue to the SAND WASH BASIN WILD HORSE AREA west of Maybell Colorado to join local and out of state advocates on the RANGE (Herd watch/range watch). The DOI/BLM Director's challenge (2012) has awarded the Snake River Field Office 25 000 dollars for cooperation with advocates to improve the range, conduct census and review fertility control, etc. In view of the planned 2013 bait trapping of some of the 250 Sand Wash horses (on 160 000 acres) this is an important opportunity to meet. It coincides with the traditional Sombrero round-up and there will be several riders, photographers and artists camping on the range.gabrielehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04782903768894349273noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9104159892896080193.post-24934682737353796592012-04-19T21:06:00.001-07:002012-04-21T08:13:41.027-07:00A perfect time for a PORTRAIT of a WILD PONY WAY LOVER: PATRICIA BURGE

2011 Ft. Collins: During a protest at the 40th anniversary of the ACT of CONGRESS for the protection of the mustangs and burros and the life and work of WILD HORSE ANNIE.

Today my friend and photographer/author John Stephen Hockensmith posted a paragraph about a very special lady, that I have known for over 15 years now. Her name is PATRICIA BURGE: We started out being Mounted patrol Poudre Wilderness Volunteers and since we live one Canyon apart here in Northern Colorado exchanged on a regular basis in regard to horse-upkeep and we took every opportunity to ride together. At the time I rode a Thoroughbred and she rode a Shagya Arabian. We both loved Icelandic Horses and Frisians and like everyone tried to experience them all. All said and done today she has one (famous) Fell Pony, two spanish mustangs, one POA, one miniture and one otherpony...- And somewhere in time I took her up to OSHOTO to visit the Spanish Mustang Registry and that changed the course of life and activity a bit....I can't recall the exact chronology, but we have been through a lot together: Witness of the 2009 Little Bookcliffs Roundup, Trip to Pryor, the town and then to the Wild Horse Herd, combined with stopover in Lovell, countless rides in our function as Forest Service volunteers, in parades, in our membership with the Northern Colorado Wild Horse and Burro Partners and now the Northern Colorado Mustang Riders and the involvement with the Extreme Mustang Makeover. We have encouraged each other and ennerved each other over mustang issues and suffering and through all I realize that there is not one other individual that I have spent quite that much time always addressing the same question: WHEN CAN WE RIDE and HOW ARE THE MUSTANGS..So today I wanted to join John Stephen and express my gratitude to PATRICIA BURGE, the concert pianist, who donated the music for the little video about the mustangs, whose EARTHSONG sounds through the Roosevelt National Forest. Patricia Burge, the teacher, who still today (fridays) drives to town to teach some promising future virtuoso, Patricia Burge, who is still saving animals (horses, wolves, and any other critter in need). Patricia Burge who lives with her beloved husband Dick Vessel in the WILD PONY WAY ....
gabrielehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04782903768894349273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9104159892896080193.post-43698135323611364022012-04-18T19:20:00.001-07:002012-04-18T19:22:19.190-07:00FUNDRAISER for ISPMB (Intern. On April 14th we were invited to haul COPPERSMITH TAG #900 to Estes Park, Colorado to participate in a Fundraiser for the OLDEST Wild Horse sanctuary in the country. Founded by WIILD HORSE ANNIE and now in the hands of KAREN SUSSMAN, ISPMB' 400 horses on 700 acres are located in the middle of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in Lantry,SD. This event was organized by renouned Wildlife Photographer WELDON LEE and his wife LORI. 50some participants gathered and listened to compassionate stories of WILD HORSE encounters, communication, history and rescue. A substantial amount of money was raised to support the extensive and ever-growing Hay costs.
Karen Sussman detailed her heritage Herds, but also eluded to the fact that numbers in the sanctuary needed to be controlled and that some of the horses were for sale.
Patricia Burge and my little dog Shawnee made it home safe.gabrielehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04782903768894349273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9104159892896080193.post-7712191382657024072012-04-15T20:15:00.001-07:002012-04-15T20:27:43.393-07:00Remember 2007: www.abenteuerreiter.deIn the beginning of 2007 I received a call from Germany. On the other end was a man who was looking for mustangs. He was an adventure rider and had already ridden from Patagonia (South America) to Mexico on 4 Criollo horses. He had not been able to bring the horses across the border because they had been exposed to a disease that prohibited import into the US.
During the conversation we discussed a plan to pick up 4 mustangs from the Canon City program and train and condition them at my Strawbale House in Red Feather Lakes, CO. from where he and his then new Partner would set out for the US segment of the Continental Divide Trail Ride (continuation).

In April I picked up Guenter Wamser and Sonja Endlweber from the Denver Airport and took them to my home in the Rockies. 3 interesting months followed. As it says, we picked up the 4 mustangs on June 22nd. At the time the two adventurers still lived in my house preparing equipment, mapping the schedule, weighing each individual item and practicing GPS navigation...The location of the house proved perfect, since the extra altitude would guarantee good condition for both horses and riders and the adjacent Forest Service Land was a great practice ground (So the cappucino was served in the morning and then they headed out pretending to be on the Continental Divide until the good smells of lunch drifted across the meadow and the horses were hobbled high-lined or staked for the night.) Gradually I urged them a bit more into the landscape, the tent was pitched next to the paddock, the nights started to be glorious and the bears stayed away for the time being. For Sonja and Guenter this was also a new adventure. They had just met during a christmas presentation of Guenters previous ride through South America and they were on their first love and live adventure (with Sonja being new to training and trail riding). The 4 year old MUSTANGS were amazing: DINO; LIGHTFOOT,ASAPACHE, RUSTY<lightfoot> took to the new life with vigor, even though rounded up in different parts of the country, from different HMA's they had spend some time living together in Canon City. They settled in among my mustangs and the beautiful spring grass was a wonderful reward for their sacrifices since being captured.</lightfoot>

I enjoyed their thorough and compassionate approach to both the animals and the land and felt this to be a "LEAVE NO TRACE", very worthwhile "RENEWABLE RESOURCE" adventure. It felt just right to support a dream that did not cost much in the way of monetary funds but took a WHOLE LOT OF COURAGE and determination...Now, 5 years later, this illustrious group of travelers, Horses dog and man and woman are still spending a good couple of months each year strutting north, currently getting ready for Alaska ...In the winter months they retreat to Germany and Austria and enjoy great cuisine and the Vienna Philharmonic and give slide show and power point presentations to all the dreamers who did not find the moment to jump off the train....(this will provide the necessary funds to continue, all in all 18 years now for Guenter Wamser). The horses take their earned rest, overwintering in Canada ( now between 9 and 10 years old) Each time I see Fran Ackley from Canon City (during the Mustang Makeover or some other mustang event, we chuckle and admire these animals who have proven to be the perfect mounts for this expedition into the UNKNOWN...
Please go to these links to find a ride that suits you:....sorry there are no links...but luckily so, there are 188 Horse Management areas in the US, PUBLIC LANDS where wild horses live. We will be riding one of these during the Maybell Colorado: SOMBRERO ROUNDUP (rounding up dude horses from winter pasture) on May 3,4,5 and 6.
There is also a beautiful ride planned along part of the Santa Fe Trail in the fall at the Cimarron Sky Dog Wild horse sanctuary in Watrous NM.
FIND YOUR OWN closest wild horse area and take time out. INVOKING THE PAUSE, battle NATURE DEFICIT DISORDER and claim your spot in the sun amongst our wild horses.
